UK passports to change colour

Just in time for Christmas, the UK government has taken another powerful, yet purely symbolic decision in order to “take back control”.

In a surprise statement, UK immigration minister Brandon Lewis said that

“I am delighted to announce that the British passport will be returning to the iconic blue and gold design after [the UK has] left the European Union in 2019.”

Áccording to Lewis, the change of colour is one step on the way to restoring national identity, which, apparently, relies to a large degree on the colour of your passport.

The question of colour has for some time been a major issue to some Brexiteers, with Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell having said that having a pink [sic] passport was even a source of national humiliation. In the real world, the passport is actually burgundy.

Ironically, it has never been an EU requirement that the national passports of the member states should be red. It has been a recommendation on line with many other recommendations (that have never been followed by the UK), and several other countries have kept the original colours of their passports. The passport of EU member state Croatia is actually blue and, until now, no sanctions have been imposed on that rebellious Croats for ignoring the official recommendations.
